21ST FIGHTER SQUADRON
IE SHIMA, OKINAWA 1945
Assigned to Okinawa in May 1945 and began operations at Ie Shima in June 1945. Engaged in combat missions over Japan and China and escorted a B-29 raid against Yawata, Japan on 8 August 1945. It was inactivated on Okinawa on 15 Oct. 1946.
These photos are from a souvenir booklet made by and for the men of the 21st Fighter Squadron on Ie Shima. The booklet is actually 7 pages of photographic paper, each 10 inches by 10 inches. They photographically produced a set of composite photos of the squadron, planes, and local views. One of the most interesting sets of photos is the peace delegation from Japan arriving at Ie Shima by Japanese military aircraft and transferring to an American plane that would fly them to Manila, Philippines for meetings with Gen. MacArthur to discuss surrender terms.
You will see each page and then individual enlargements of each of the photos on the page.
